Pen Pals across Nations
Valley View Elementary School and Escuela Bolivariana
Reading is great, but reading an international pen pal's letter is the best!
Since 2003, children in the dual immersion program at Valley View Elementary School (Pleasanton, CA) and children at Escuela Bolivariana Caserío El Páramo, Valle de la Pascua, Guárico (site of the first library) have been writing to each other. They exchange photos, favorite pastimes, pets, chores, hopes and wishes, and even some small hand-made crafts. Even the second graders wrote beautiful letters, full of stories and friendship.
Pen Pals Jackson, Betsiree and Sol from the Escuela Bolivariana Caserío El Páramo, Guárico State, Venezuela, and their USA Pen Pal, Kevin Rodriguez (3rd child from top) from Valley View Elementary School, Pleasanton, Ca.
The Californians learned about anacondas (snakes), guacamayos (macaws) and hallacas (Christmas tamales) and farm animals their Venezuelan pen pals drew pictures of or wrote about.
All the children hope to meet their pen pals some day, but for now they'll continue to write each year.
