Candy Mart
Valley View Elementary School Fundraising
In the spring of 2004, Mrs. Houck's second graders at Valley View Elementary really wanted to send books to their pen pals in Venezuela, but it was both costly and difficult. With the best solution being to send money to buy books locally, the second grade organized a one-week candy sale, which they called "Candy Mart".
Kevin Rodriguez (center) organized the "Candy Mart" fundraiser. Each day after school his classmates sold candy bars with the tremendous support of the teachers, librarian, and parents. By Friday (after several trips to Costco to buy candy!!) they had raised $475 to buy books for their pen pals in El Páramo.
